The Leadership Team of Hersh Brothers Kicking Camp

Robert Hersh

Robert Hersh is a former player of Texas Southern University. He has also coached for the Special Teams of Texas Southern University as well as the kickers and punters from 2014-2017.

Robert has helped develop two All Americans, one of whom was Cory Carter, a punter of the Buffalo Bills and was previously with the Houston Texans. The other was Eric Medina, a kicker who was 15/16 his senior year on field goals and #1 in the country.

College Football Career

Robert was a four-year letterman from 2008-2012 at Texas Southern University.
He began his career as the starting kicker, earning several Special Teams Player of the Week awards for the conference in his career.

In 2012, by the opening game versus Prairie View A&M, Texas Southern had a six-year losing streak. That changed with a 47-yard game-winning field goal coming from Robert. Later on that season, he came in clutch with a 32-yarder to beat Grambling State. After the 2012 season, he was named as a punter in the second team all-conference and the 2012 HBCU all-star game.

Going into his senior year, he became the starting punter. After his senior year, Robert was 7-10 on field goals and had a 41.3 yard average on punts. He graduated from Texas Southern University in May 2013.

Postcollege Career

Following graduation, Robert went to minicamp with the CFL Toronto Argonauts. After being cut from the team, he started teaching Physical Education and coaching high school football. Robert also took up a Master’s of Science Degree in Health Education and finished it in 2016.

Jonathan Hersh

Coach Jonathan Hersh is completing his third year with La Marque following coaching and teaching stops at three previous schools.  Coach Hersh was a kicker for three years for the Austin College Kangaroos (Sherman, TX) where he earned a BA degree in Psychology and a Master of Arts in Teaching.

Following graduation, Coach was a graduate assistant for the Kangaroo football team.  Coach Hersh played his high school football for the Pearland Oilers and Alan B. Shephard (Il) High Schools.  For a decade, Coach Hersh ran the Hersh Brothers Kicking Camps with his brother, Coach Robert Hersh and have several graduates who have gone on to have successful college kicking careers.  Little known fact about Coach Hersh.  He did not have an interest in football as he was a budding soccer star.  Prior to the start of 8th grade football, the school coach pulled the future Coach Hersh aside and told him he was playing football that season and would not take no for an answer!

Coach Hersh went on that season to surprise everyone with his achievements as a running back and realized his future would be in football! In high school the coaches needed kickers and with his soccer experience they converted Coach into a kicker and punter. And as we say…the rest is history!

Cory Carter

High School Football Career

Cory Carter grew up in Jackson, MS where he played club soccer for 14 years. During his senior year in high school, his best friend, Alvin, who also played soccer for the school, decided to be the kicker for the football team. Alvin wound up suffering a minor ankle injury mid-season during practice, and Cory was out on the soccer field.

College Football Career

Their coach asked Cory if he could kick and long story short, he ended up kicking for the rest of the year and getting a scholarship to play for Texas Southern University. Cory was a backup kicker his freshman year and saw the field for kickoffs in the later part of the season.

For his sophomore year, Cory transitioned to be a punter. He led the SWAC conference in punting for three years in a row.

Postcollege Career

In 2016, after college, Cory had the opportunity to try out for the Houston Texans. The following year, he signed his first NFL contract with the team. Cory went through training camp and suffered a minor hip injury, which led to him being released.

Later that year he had a workout with the Buffalo Bills and was signed to the practice squad. Following the end of the season, Cory resigned with the Bills for two years. In the second preseason game, he tore his ACL ending his 2018 season. Currently, Cory is a part of the Bills organization, completing the punting job for the 2019 season.

Eric Medina

Eric Medina was a kicker for the football team of La Porte High School from 2009-2013. He then continued his career at Texas Southern University and played for its team from 2013-2017.

Eric is an exceptional athlete who as a career-long of 57 yards and has participated in the FCS Bowl Game. He has also worked out with Houston Texans and received the following awards and recognitions:

  • Two-Time Special Teams Player of the Year

  • Four-Time First Team All-District Kicker

  • All-Time Leader in La Porte High School in Points, Fields Goals in a Season, and Career Field Goals

  • First Team All-Conference Kicker

  • First Team All-Conference Punter

  • First Team All-American Kicker

  • Senior Year 15/16 on Field Goals With a Long of 51

  • Senior Year Special Teams Player of the Year
